Intense Pulse Light (IPL)

What Is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy—OptiLight by Lumenis?

OptiLight is an advanced Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment designed to address dry eye symptoms by targeting the underlying causes of the condition. This non-invasive therapy uses broad-spectrum light to reduce inflammation, improve meibomian gland function, and enhance tear film stability. It is the first and only IPL treatment that has received FDA approval specifically for dry eye management.

This treatment is safe and gentle, supported by more than 20 clinical studies demonstrating its effectiveness.

How does it work?

OptiLight utilizes targeted light pulses to diminish inflammation commonly linked to dry eye disease, enhance tear break-up time, and improve the function of meibomian glands. This treatment can provide substantial relief from dry eye symptoms and offers a range of benefits, including:

  • Improving the stability of your tear film
  • Decreasing the presence of demodex mites and bacteria around the eyes
  • Removing blood vessels that lead to inflammation
  • Enhancing the functionality of the meibomian glands

What to Except

Before Your Treatment

To prepare for your treatment, please refrain from prolonged sun exposure or tanning for at least two weeks beforehand. It’s essential to wear sunscreen whenever you go outdoors.

During Your Treatment

The treatment process is quick and straightforward. Your doctor will apply a coupling gel to the treatment area and cover your eyes with protective shields.

As the light is applied, you may feel a warm sensation, but the procedure is gentle and involves minimal discomfort. The actual treatment will take approximately 10–15 minutes.

Following the OptiLight procedure, meibomian gland expression is often performed.

After Your Treatment

For the first 48 hours post-treatment, it's important to avoid prolonged sun exposure or tanning. You may experience a mild sunburn sensation and some redness; these effects are normal and should subside quickly.

You can typically apply makeup after your treatment; however, monitor your skin for any adverse reactions and discontinue use if you experience any issues.

We recommend cleansing your skin with gentle, lukewarm water while avoiding hot water. Additionally, using a moisturizer or aloe vera gel at night and sunscreen during the day is advisable between treatment sessions.

Is OptiLight by Lumenis the Right Treatment for Me?

While OptiLight by Lumenis is a highly effective option for managing dry eye symptoms, it’s important to ensure that it’s the right fit for you. We do not recommend this treatment if you:

  • Aqueous Deficiency Dry Eye: OptiLight is not recommended for individuals with aqueous deficiency dry eye, as it is designed primarily for evaporative dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction.
  • Have a history of keloid scarring
  • Have severe scarring around your eye
  • Active Infections or Inflammation
  • Pregnancy or Breastfeeding
  • Use of Certain Medications: Some medications, particularly those that increase sensitivity to light, may contraindicate the use of OptiLight.
  • Certain Skin Conditions: Individuals with specific skin disorders, such as eczema or psoriasis in the treatment area, may need to avoid OptiLight.

Your doctor will provide the most accurate assessment of whether this treatment is right for you. Be sure to bring up your potential eligibility for OptiLight by Lumenis during your upcoming appointment.
